Western Carolina wins seventh straight season opener and tenth in to begin 2015 season at Childress Field/Hennon Stadium.

Drafted in the eighth round of the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft with the 226th overall pick by the Minnesota Twins. LINK

Career Notes: Finished his WCU career tied for fourth with 27 career wins on the mound, matching Jason Beverlin (27, 1992-94), who was a 2008 inductee into the WCU Athletics Hall of Fame ... Sammons' .675 winning percentage (27-13) rank him 11th in program history ... He finished tied for 19th in appearances (71), second in games started (57, tied for 7th in SoCon history), second in career strikeouts with 325 -- a mark which also ranked him seventh in SoCon history -- and was fifth in WCU history in career innings pitched (339.2).

2017 (Senior): Made 15 appearances on the year with 14 starts, posting an 8-3 overall record with one save in his lone relief appearance ... Finished with a 3.02 collective ERA, fifth in the SoCon, over 104.1 innings pitched -- the third-most among SoCon pitchers ... Tossed over 100 pitches in each of his 14 starts, pitching at least five innings in each start ... Recorded a team-leading and career-high 108 strikeouts on the year -- tied for third in the SoCon -- a mark that included a career-high 14 K's against The Citadel (March 31), garnering National Player of the Week plaudits from Collegiate BaseballNamed Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week on March 1 ... 2016 (Junior): Made 18 appearances on the year, each coming in the starting role ... His 18 starts led the Southern Conference and were tied for first in WCU's single-season record books ... Recorded a career-high 100.1 innings pitched, the third-most in the conference in 2016 ... Posted a career-best eight victories with a 8-3 overall mark with a 5.74 ERA ... Recorded a team-high tying 89 strikeouts, finishing tied for sixth in the SoCon and tied for 14th in WCU's single-season record book ... Tossed five-or-more innings in 15 of his 18 appearances, lasting seven-or-more innings in the starting role five times ... Struck out a season-high nine -- one shy of his career-best -- in six innings in a starting role at Wofford (April 2) ... 2015 (Sophomore): Made 16 appearances on the season including 14 starts and two relief outings ... Led the WCU pitching staff with 75.0 innings pitched on the year -- all but an 1.2 coming in a starting role ... Was second on the team with 71 strikeouts while issuing a team-high 56 walks ... Struck out five-or-more a combined seven times ... Fanned five in six innings in a combined shutout victory over regular season and tournament champion, Mercer (April 11) ... Tossed a season-long 7.0 innings in a no-decision at East Tennessee State (April 25) ... Struck out a career-high 10 in the SoCon Tournament game against Samford (May 20), limiting the Bulldogs to just one hit through five innings ... Was tabbed preseason All-SoCon second team by ... 2014 (Freshman): Made 21 appearances on the mound including 10 starts ... Finished with a 7-2 overall record with all seven wins coming at home ... Ranked fourth on the team with 60.0 innings pitched ... Allowed 34 runs, 30 of which were earned for a 4.50 ERA ... Added two saves including his first in his first career appearance, securing the final two outs in a season-opening upset of No. 2 Mississippi State (Feb. 14) ... Struck out three in three innings of one-hit, shutout relief in his first career victory - an 8-0 win over Winthrop (Feb. 18) ... Recorded 57 strikeouts including a career-high seven times in three different outings - home win over UNC Asheville (April 1), a no-decision against Furman (April 12) and a victory in the season-finale against Davidson (May 16) ... Made his first collegiate start with a solid five-inning performance in WCU's convincing 18-10 victory over No. 15 Clemson (March 4) ... Tossed a career-high 7.2 innings in a home nonconference victory over UNC Asheville (April 1) ... Named to the Southern Conference All-Freshman team ... Prior to Western Carolina: Was a three-year letter winner for two-time Mideastern Conference champion Hoggard High, claiming player of the year honors in 2013 ... Twice earned all-area honors with an honorable mention coming as a sophomore ... Posted a 16-1 record over his final two seasons as a prep including a 10-0 record with seven complete games as a senior ... Boasted a 1.00 ERA, five shutout wins and 98 strikeouts in 63 innings in his final year as a prep, earning Wilmington StarNews All-Area Player of the Year accolades ... Also playing first base, batted .306 with a home run and 15 RBI, recording a .852 OPS ... Was a North Carolina Gatorade State player of the Year candidate ...
