LOUISVILLE, K.Y. -- Amanda Goetschius finished 12th overall as the Charlotte 49ers women’s cross country team earned a 10th place team finish in the 2011 NCAA East Regional on Saturday. With her performance, Goetschius earned All-Region honors and will be under consideration to receive an at-large big to the NCAA Cross Country Championship in Terre Haute, IN on Nov. 21st. The Franklinville, NJ native has competed in the championship once before, during the 2008 season.
“Amanda did an awesome job,” said head coach Ed Schlichter. “She’s really starting to catch fire at the correct part of the season. I’m really proud of the way she ran today. She ran with heart and passion, and she had the best race of her career for cross country. If anybody deserves to go to NCAAs it’s her.”
Goetschius completed the women’s 6K race in 20:40.8, a new PR for that distance. She also finished ahead of this year’s Atlantic 10 Conference Champion, Richmond’s Jill Prentice, by 22 seconds.
Coming in second for the Niners was junior Hana Sutchar, who finished 32nd overall with a time of 21:18, just seven spots from earning All-Region honors. Rookies Jenna Christensen (92nd in 22:17.5) and Jen Molke (104th in 22:28) were third and fourth, both turning in outstanding performances in the first regional of their careers. Senior Aurora Trujillo rounded out the top five, finishing 112th in 22:33.
“Aurora finished our her cross country career on a high note with a big PR,” Schlichter noted. “She really helped her team out and it was a great way to end her season.”
“I’m really proud of the way the ladies ran today. They saved their best race for this meet on the national stage at the Southeast Regional. This was one of our highest finishes in recent years. one two punch today was one of the best that Charlotte’s ever had.”
On the men’s side, junior Daweet Dagnachew was the top finisher in the 10K race with a time of 32:25, improving from last year’s race. Freshman Zach Greth was right behind him, coming in at 32:30. Ross Roberson (32:55), Cody Hodgins (33:13) and Dakota Lowery (33:25) rounded out the top five.
“This was probably the guys’ best meet of the year. They beat a couple teams that got the better of them earlier in the year. We still aren’t capitalizing on taking advantage of a good start. They’ve got a lot of hard work to put in and a little bit of time to get ready for indoor. “I’m not too excited about where we finished, but I’m excited to see how they’re going to improve.”
